3 Organising Hacks for Visual People
Do you leave things out by the door so you won't forget to bring them to your mum's house? Or do you keep your vitamins by the kettle so you remember to take them? You're in good company, because I too do best with my healthy habits when I have visual reminders. It's something that has come with my recent diagnosis of ADHD - a degree of missing object permanence when things are not regularly in view.
The problem is though (as you are probably well aware) the more things we have out, the more cluttered our spaces get... and the harder it is to notice them! And have any space to make dinner...
So let me share an awesome new visual reminder system in my daily routine, but before I get into that, here's a few tips for keeping yourself organised when you are a very visual person.
1. Clear Storage Containers
Keep things up out of your way, but still easy to spot with transparent containers. No more mystery junk boxes... Better yet, if you can reuse some old packaging, use glass jars, or grab some containers from the charity shop you won't have to worry about investing in new plastic.
2. A Well-Placed Hook
Keep your countertops and floor clear with a simple hook on the wall or the back of a door. A hook at eye level will make things stand out and your items will seem purposefully placed. If you are concerned about making permanent holes try Command hooks (come off without damage) or a door bracket with hooks.
3. Only The Most Important
Do your best to keep a select few of priority items out on display so that they actually do catch your eye. This could be medications (watch out for grabbing kids), phone chargers, or the gift to bring to your friend's house today. Try trading items on countertops for fridge post-its or reminders in your phone. One ingenious teacher bought 500 blank concert wrist bands to send reminders home with her students and now I want a pack for myself.
BONUS: Game-Changing Water Hack
Ok, as promised, here is my new game-changing hack to remind myself to drink water. I had been planning this for a while and when I found a set of drinking bottles in my local pound shop I picked up three labelled M (morning), A (afternoon), and E (evening).
I've actually been drinking 3 x 450ml of water each day after I fill them in the morning and bring them with me during the day. I highly recommend this one if you completely lose track of how much you are drinking during the day.
Happy water bottle shopping!
